Gold in Landfills

Gold in land fills
Design Genro/ Gold in land fills

The fulfilment of living, not surviving, starts with one having a roof over their head - a house. Apart from housing our daily activities, the house also fulfils basic human needs. These needs could be physical, economic, social and psychological. Physical needs: providing shelter and security from and against inclement weather conditions and other human’s activities. Economic needs: by housing economic activities like small tuck shops to manufacturing. Social needs: by providing a communal place for human activity, the basic unit of society. It is after all the collection of the individual houses/ families that forms a city/ society.

“Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.”(Universal Declaration of Human Rights: article 25(1)

Psychological needs: by providing a sense of personal space and privacy.  Specific to Botswana; population growth, migration from rural to urban areas and insufficient financial resources has resulted in homelessness and/or habitation of inadequate housing. This is particularly evident in Gaborone, the capital city. The Botswana Housing Corporation has since 1971 been mandated with providing housing to citizens. The question though is are these affordable to the average citizen? For one to truly move towards providing housing to all people it should be made affordable to both build, equip and maintain.  Design Genro.
